Earlier this month, I made this post about Spring Cleaning and how I planned to get rid of 5 items per room every month that do not add any value to my life.
Here’s what happened:
I cannot even believe the unexpected benefits that purging my home of unnecessary junk, stuff, and clutter has brought about. I did an initial cleaning from each room, including our linen closet, bedroom closet, and I also got rid of the items that I had planned to for the month of January. Here’s a few reasons why you should purge your home, too:
- I am cleaning up less. Having less “stuff” lying around the house means that less stuff will end up on the floor. I am loving this benefit, I spend so much less time picking up after my children now that there really isn’t too much for them to make a mess with(with the exception of their own bedrooms, of course).
- My husband and I argue less. He has OCD(he’s a clean-freak and needs things “just so”) and I definitely do not–I like my organized messes. Now that there is less clutter and things lying around, I am able to keep our house looking ready for company pretty much at a moment’s notice. He was always “on my case” about the state of the house, and now he doesn’t even mention it. Score!
- I feel more relaxed. I suffer from postpartum depression and anxiety, and walking into a kitchen with messy counters and a sink full of dishes is overwhelming to me. Now that I am able to better manage the messes and clutter, I feel more relaxed in general. I yell less often and I feel like I am much more patient with my children.
- We are saving money! By not having such a cluttered kitchen, I am definitely planning meals and cooking more at home instead of ordering out. Hooray for saving money!!
What’s next on the cleaning list?
Next, I plan to ask my children to go through their toys and clothes and donate whatever doesn’t fit or they don’t play with any longer. I’ll also have a garbage bag for broken toys, trash(lots of it in a kid’s room), and ripped items of clothing. I’d like them to narrow their “stuff” down to having 30-40 toys each, which I feel is still a lot of toys considering that I have 4 children.
I am going to tackle under the kitchen and bathroom sinks during the month of February, and hopefully get more organized by installing either a shelf or a bin to hold cleaning products. I would also like to go through our baking/spice cupboard and combine duplicate spices, get rid of really old ones, and make a list of things that I’d like to add to our inventory.
